Song for a Fifth Child

I heard this poem a long time ago, and I loved it. On days like today, when I feel like I might have spent too much time playing with Lincoln and not enough time doing my daily chores, I remember this poem and then I don't feel so bad. He's growing up way too fast and I don't want to miss a moment.

Mother, O Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing, make up the bed,
Sew on a button and butter the bread.

Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.

Oh, I've grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue,
Lullabye, rockabye, lullabye loo.
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo

The shopping's not done and there's nothing for stew
And out in the yard there's a hullabaloo
But I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo
Look! Aren't his eyes the most wonderful hue?
Lullabye, rockaby lullabye loo.

The cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow
But children grow up as I've learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs; Dust go to sleep!
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep

Oh Megan, I love it! My mother in law gave me the last part of this poem when Adeline was born. I hope that you guys enjoyed your day. This weather is beautiful and so is that baby boy of yours! Enjoy the gift that God has blessed you with.

I absolutely love that poem. Put aside all those crazy chores and enjoy all the special times with Lincoln cause they will pass by so fast. I know they did with you and Josh. Stop and enjoy all the wonderful things in life. Be a Mary and not a Martha. 8)))) love ya

This is a poem that I have heard many times and it's soooo true. I can get quite anxious about my "home" and my "chores" Trust me, he'll be 5 before you know it :)

What a wonderful story. It so true how time passes by if we don't grab a hold of it. Give him some extra kisses from me.

I taught her NOTHING about photography. She's teaching me! Her work is going to be featured in the upcoming issue of The Southeast Outlook ... so check it out!
